Sylvie’s story
I have always been passionate about books and reading. For me, helping others learn to read or improve their reading skills means giving them access to one of life’s most essential tools.
For many years, I volunteered at a local school, supporting children with their reading. When I discovered the opportunity to help adults improve their literacy through the Read-On scheme at my local library, I knew I wanted to contribute and make a real difference.
As a volunteer, I meet with my learner once a week for a one-to-one session in the library, lasting about an hour. We usually begin by reviewing what we covered in the previous session and celebrating any progress or highlights. We use a textbook to track progress, and the library provides a range of reading resources tailored to the learner’s ability.
During each session, I encourage my learner to choose a book to read together. We use flashcards and letter tiles to overcome any challenges, making the process interactive and supportive. This helps build confidence and keeps the sessions engaging.

It’s incredibly rewarding to see my learner’s excitement when he recognises or reads a new word. Recently, he has developed a love for a particular series of books, and each week he selects the one for us to read.
