Early years settings

Small stories make a big difference

The Early Years Foundation Stage plays one of the most defining roles in helping children fall in love with reading.

The National Year of Reading 2026 is here to make that easier, offering simple, playful ideas to build stories and books into your everyday activities and routines.

If you work in a school setting, you can also explore our guidance and resources on our Schools page.

Why it matters

Reading in early years changes everything

  • Early reading is a foundation for learning

Hearing stories, songs and rhymes from infancy strengthens vital brain pathways, builds vocabulary and helps children develop the communication skills they rely on for life. These early literacy experiences lay the groundwork for future learning.

  • Stories support beyond the moment

Sharing books and stories helps children make sense of emotions, explore new ideas and build secure relationships with the adults around them. When they are part of everyday life, children grow in confidence, become more curious and develop emotional resilience.

We need your support

You shape their reading from the very beginning

  • Supporting you and your setting

The National Year of Reading will help you make stories part of everyday life in your setting. You’ll find simple ideas, playful activities and ready-to-use tools to help you spark children’s curiosity.

  • Reaching beyond your setting

By helping families feel confident reading at home – in whatever way works for them – you’ll keep that early momentum going. The campaign will give you resources to share with parents and carers, so together you can give every child the strongest possible start.

reading tips

You don’t need to be a perfect storyteller

What matters most is bringing stories to life in a way that engages children and helps them follow the meaning.

Try out character voices, play with pace and expression, and use pictures to spark conversation. The more you practise, the more confident you’ll feel, and the richer the experience becomes for the children in your care.
