Emma & Ellen’s story

Two adults standing in a library holding a certificate

I started volunteering with Read Easy when I saw a flyer which asked the question, “Can you help an adult to learn to read?”

I called and after an interview and some excellent training, I became a reading coach. That’s when I met Ellen. Ellen didn’t learn to read as a child because she didn’t get any help.

“I was just told I was naughty. My self esteem was very low. The things I find most difficult are instructions or reading recipes and letters. I spoke to a friend about my struggles with reading, she encouraged me to approach Read Easy.”

Ellen

Ellen continues, “At the first session I was nervous but I was ready. To think I would be able to read a book – I had waited a long time for that! I had even invested in some bookmarks.

Since I have been learning to read, life is a lot better. I am proud of myself. Read Easy is worth every minute I never thought that I could do this – but I can! I saw a Facebook quote that said “I’m just a girl who loves tattoos and loves books” and I thought, that’s me!”

Its been a privilege to be Ellen’s reading coach, I am so very proud of what she has achieved.

Emma, Read Easy UK volunteer

I am now supporting my eighth reader. No two readers are the same and that is one of the most important things for me. Our sessions generally include the Read Easy manual and reading books, and some activities.

When I meet a new reader, they are often, shy, nervous and very unsure. Quite often, their family, friends or work colleagues don’t know that they struggle. After a while I notice a change. They sit taller and engage more with me as they start to feel that they can achieve.

This experience has also changed my life. I have grown in confidence and feel that I am providing life changing support. I get to meet lots of interesting people and watch them grow in confidence too. I often find myself smiling after a session because I see how much it means to them and how it can change their lives.

Socials

Reading expands minds, builds confidence and fuels creativity. Yet with more distractions and less time, reading for pleasure is in decline across many groups.

The National Year of Reading 2026 is here to change that, by reconnecting reading with everyday culture.
