Gail’s story

Adult smiling while seated indoors, holding a book or papers

I’ve been volunteering with Bookmark Reading Charity since 2021, and I absolutely love it.

Bookmark volunteering was very appealing to me because I wanted to make a real difference in children’s lives by helping them develop a love for reading and the confidence to succeed. Reading is such an essential skill, and supporting young readers felt like a meaningful way to give back.

The reading programme consists of 12 sessions, each lasting 30 minutes, spread over six weeks, so two sessions per week and can be done online. Starting a programme with a new reader is always exciting because it’s the beginning of a journey where you get to see their progress unfold. There are lots of activities on the platform for that initial session which help me get to know the pupil and learn about their interests. This makes it easier to help them choose books they’ll enjoy and that speak to them.

“It’s absolutely wonderful when you see a child truly enjoy a book and watch them shine.”

Gail, Bookmark Reading Charity volunteer

My main focus is always to make the sessions fun and boost the reader’s confidence. It’s absolutely wonderful when you see a child truly enjoy a book and watch them shine as they realise they’re reading more challenging words and sentences. Knowing I’m having a positive impact on a child’s reading journey and sparking an interest in books really makes my week and I often find myself smiling as I recall moments from reading sessions.

Throughout my time with Bookmark, I’ve supported many pupils, and I’ve enjoyed working with each and every one. There are a number of memorable moments, the most recent of which was when I was telling my reader how well she’d done in our session, and she replied saying how much she’d liked it, concluding that she completely loves her Bookmark reading. I couldn’t have been more delighted!

Volunteering has had a huge effect on me, too. It’s given me a great sense of purpose; a new interest and I’ve become an even greater advocate for childhood literacy. I wholeheartedly recommend volunteering with Bookmark Reading Charity because it’s an incredibly flexible way to volunteer, the Bookmark community is extremely friendly and supportive, and, most of all, it’s an opportunity to have a positive impact on a child’s future.

Socials

Reading expands minds, builds confidence and fuels creativity. Yet with more distractions and less time, reading for pleasure is in decline across many groups.
