Simon’s story

Adult supporting a child while reading a book together at a table

I have a strong belief in the value and magic of reading and when I came across the volunteering opportunities at Coram Beanstalk.

I immediately thought, “Aha, what a great opportunity to encourage young people to find the magic in reading for pleasure.” After I completed my training, I began my 1:1 reading sessions with three Key Stage 1 pupils who I would work with over the course of the year.

“My main objective was to have fun; to enjoy reading books, talking about books and playing games related to books.”

My sessions varied but they generally included games like ‘Book I Spy’ or some acting out, pupils reading to me, me reading to the pupils, us reading together and lots of chat and questions. “What’s going to happen next?” “I think this is funny, what do you think?”

The biggest assessment of impact was the genuine pleasure and enthusiasm that the pupils demonstrated over the year we read together. The class teachers and Head teacher were always positive and supportive, remarking on the pupils’ growth in confidence and improved reading skills. The confidence of one of the pupils was remarked on by an Ofsted Inspector; a girl who had been very quiet and withdrawn.

Working with young children of this age is fun and rewarding. Their natural and honest responses are refreshing, sometimes bizarre but always entertaining. And the books… there are so many excellent books for young children. There are witty stories, beautiful language, and superb illustrations.

The best writers can deal with big issues, like loneliness, prejudice, and friendship with a light and humorous touch. I have become an avid visitor to the children’s section at my local library since volunteering.

Memorable moments are plenty. My best though, was a boy who in class was restless and struggling for many reasons. With me, he transformed from being disinterested to focused, engaged and perceptive when we stumbled across a book about medieval knights which he absolutely loved and clearly understood.

In short, volunteering with Coram Beanstalk is rewarding and fun in equal measure. It is great to know that you have, in some small measure, helped to develop a child’s interest in reading that will stay with them for their lifetime.

Socials

Reading expands minds, builds confidence and fuels creativity. Yet with more distractions and less time, reading for pleasure is in decline across many groups.

The National Year of Reading 2026 is here to change that, by reconnecting reading with everyday culture.
